Do you know where you want to be tomorrow? ...next month? ...next year? ...in 5 years? ...10 years? ... ... ... ...
In nautical terms, a 'Bearing' is point on the compass marking a straight line from your location to a distant point of interest. It could be a landmark or another vessel. The term 'Mark' is the verbal announcement denoting the act of putting a time stamp on the bearing.
In the case of moving vessels on the water or in the air, this becomes important because the real bearing changes constantly. This requires an updated 'Bearing Mark' to stay on course.
Once our journey begins, the only thing that changes is the direction we are heading. A true course heading requires constant attention.
There can be many interruptions, distractions, and sometimes even severe setbacks. Maintaining a steady course will be a daily exercise in personal commitment and sometimes a hard look at our own personal need for course corrections. Imagination and self-deception can blind us to harsh realities. Holding a true heading will require many "Bearing Mark" measurements to make sure we know our real location.
