In nautical terms, a 'Bearing' is point on the compass marking a straight line from your location to a distant point of interest. It could be a landmark or another vessel.  The term 'Mark' is the verbal announcement denoting the act of putting a time stamp on the bearing.

In the  case of moving vessels on the water or in the air, this becomes important because the bearing will continue to change - requiring a frequently updated 'Bearing Mark' to stay on course.
